Wrestler-turned-politician Vinesh Phogat secured the Julana seat for the Congress party in the Haryana Assembly elections on Tuesday with over 6,000 votes.
A prominent face in protests against Brij Bhushan Singh, the former chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), for alleged sexual harassment of female
wrestlers, Phogat's victory was sweeter because she managed to bag Julana for the Congress after a gap of 19 years.
Till reports last came in the ruling BJP had crossed the majority mark in the Haryana Assembly elections, winning six seats and leading in 44 while the Congress had won 11 seats and was ahead in 23, according to the Election Commission website.
The big guns leading in the elections included state Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Congress leaders Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Udai Bhan as well as independent candidate Savitri Jindal.
Senior BJP leader Anil Vij, the JJP's Dushyant Chautala and INLD's Abhay Singh Chautala were trailing.
Phogat contested against BJP candidate Yogesh Bairagi, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) candidate Amarjeet Dhanda, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate and wrestler Kavita Dalal.
