A 30-year-old British Sikh man was fatally stabbed in East London last week in what police believe was an attack involving individuals known to each other. The Metropolitan Police on Thursday formally identified the victim as Gurmuk Singh, also known as Gary.

The incident occurred on July 23 at a residential property on Felbrigge Road in Ilford, East London. The police were alerted by the London Ambulance Service, which had received reports of an altercation at the location. “Officers attended as Gary was being treated for stab wounds,” said a statement from the Metropolitan Police. “Despite the best efforts of the paramedics, he sadly died at the scene,” it added.

Following the incident, 27-year-old Amardeep Singh was arrested on suspicion of murder. He has since been charged with one count of murder and remains in custody. His trial is scheduled to take place at London’s Old Bailey on January 5, 2026. In addition to Amardeep Singh, detectives arrested four other individuals in connection with the fatal stabbing—a 29-year-old man and three women aged 29, 30, and 54. All four have been released on bail pending further investigation, with bail extended until October.

A post-mortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was a stab wound to the left thigh. An inquest has been opened and subsequently adjourned while investigations continue. In a statement released by the police, Gary’s family paid an emotional tribute, describing him as a beloved member of their community.

“Gary was a well-loved man who had a remarkable ability to connect with everyone he met,” the family said. “A true social butterfly, nothing brought him more joy than being surrounded by his family. Gary will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in our hearts forever.” Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke from the Met's Specialist Crime North unit said that based on the initial findings, the attack appeared to be an isolated incident.

“An incident of this nature sends shockwaves throughout the local area, and we understand the direct impact it has on the community,” said DCI Yorke. “People can expect to see an increased police presence in the area as investigations proceed. Please don’t hesitate to approach officers if you have any concerns.” The investigation remains ongoing as the police continue to gather evidence and establish the full circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing.
