A Bangladeshi cargo vessel sank in the Muriganga River near Kachuberia on Wednesday night, triggering concern among local residents and river authorities.
The ship, MV Tamjid and Nasir, was en route from Kolkata Port to Bangladesh when the incident occurred. According to administrative sources, the accident took place mid-river between Ghoramara Island and Kachuberia.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the vessel developed a sudden mechanical failure, leading to a loss of control in the strong river current. Within a short time, a crack developed in the lower portion of the ship, allowing water to enter and causing it to sink.
Koteswara Rao, Superintendent of Police of the Sundarbans Police District, confirmed that all 12 people on board were safely rescued.
“Police from Sagar police station promptly reached the spot and rescued all crew members. Everyone is safe,” he said.
The crew members, all Bangladeshi nationals, were given first aid after being rescued and were later accommodated at a multi-purpose shelter under the jurisdiction of the Gangasagar police station. Authorities have arranged food and drinking water for them, and efforts are underway to establish contact with Bangladeshi officials to facilitate their return.

An investigation has been launched to ascertain the nature of the cargo the ship was carrying at the time of the incident. The administration is also closely monitoring the situation to ensure that no oil or hazardous substances have leaked into the river. The environment department has been informed, and water samples from the Muriganga River are being tested as a precautionary measure.
The incident led to temporary disruption of river traffic, with several launches and cargo vessels diverted to alternative routes. Local fishermen have expressed concern over possible pollution in the river.
Meanwhile, salvage operations for the damaged vessel were ongoing on Thursday morning. Authorities have stated that a detailed inquiry will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the accident.
