As many as eight people were killed during a major police raid on Rio de Janeiro’s favela communities on Wednesday, Brazilian authorities confirmed. Police said the operation targeted Claudio Augusta dos Santos, a commander of a powerful criminal gang in the Prazeres favela. He was killed along with six other suspected gang members and one local resident during a fierce gunfight. As many as 150 military police officers participated in the raid, which covered areas including Prazeres, Fallet, Fogueteiro, Coroa, Escondidinho and Paula Ramos.
Dos Santos, an alleged drug-trafficker, had been on police hit-lists after being linked to the murder of Italian tourist Roberto Bardella. The raid sparked outrage among local residents, who took to the streets in protest. Five people were arrested for alleged vandalism during the demonstrations. This latest operation comes months after Brazilian police killed more than 130 cartel members in the nearby Complexo da Penha favela, raising renewed questions about the methods of state security forces.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva condemned the raid as a ‘massacre’. Left-wing politicians criticised it as part of a reckless pattern of confrontations between police and organised crime. Right-wing figures, however, demanded even stronger action against criminal gangs, which security agencies have increasingly labelled ‘foreign terrorist organisations’ to justify intensified operations.
The ongoing crackdown on drug and human trafficking networks has deeply divided Brazilian politics, with sharp debates over the use of lethal force versus human rights concerns.
