US tech billionaire Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, is already halfway there to becoming the planet’s first trillionaire, reports said.

The 54-year-old Tesla and SpaceX CEO became the first person to have his net worth surge to $500.1 billion on Wednesday as shares in his electric vehicle company rebounded from his on-and-off stint in politics. His net worth later dropped to $499.1 billion.

The 2025 Forbes list ranked him as the first person to achieve half a trillion in net worth.

Following him on the list are Oracle CEO, Larry Ellison, with a net worth of $350.7 billion, followed by Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, with a net worth of $245.8 billion.

Musk has a graduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, although he was a Stanford University drop-out.

He banked his first few millions in 1999 after selling an online publishing software company to US computer-maker, Compaq, for more than $300 million.

Musk’s new company later merged with PayPal, after which he exited the venture.

The South Africa-born tech entrepreneur then founded space rocket company, SpaceX, in 2002 and became the chairman of electric car-maker, Tesla, in 2004.

Most of Musk’s massive wealth is closely tied to his more-than-12-per-cent stake in Tesla, which has seen a sharp increase this year.

On Wednesday, Tesla shares rose 3.3 per cent at the end of New York trading session, and have now risen to 20 per cent.

The company’s stocks have been making advances in recent months as stockholders welcome Musk focusing more time in his companies than on politics.
