F-15 crashes in Kuwait amid Iran-US conflict

A video showed a twin-engine jet — consistent with an F-15E or an F/A-18 —engulfed in flames before plunging into a tailspin approximately 10 kilometres from the Ali Al Salem Air Base. The base is a critical hub for US operations in the region.

The most alarming aspect of the morning's events is the suggestion that the aircraft may have been victims of "friendly fire." Analysts pointed to the possibility that the jets were engaged by a Patriot air defence battery.

In a series of chaotic and deeply concerning incidents on Monday morning, several US fighter jets reportedly crashed in Kuwait, sparking fears of a breakdown in local air defence co-ordination. While initial reports focused on a single F-15, a spokesperson for Kuwait’s Ministry of Defence later confirmed that "several" aircraft had gone down, although the exact number remains a mystery.

The Ministry confirmed that search and rescue teams were scrambled immediately. Thankfully, all crew members managed to eject and have been taken to hospital, where their condition is described as stable. The wreckage, however, has caused significant disruption on the ground; the Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC) reported that debris fell into the Mina Al Ahmadi refinery, injuring two workers and triggering an emergency response.

Perhaps the most alarming aspect of the morning's events is the suggestion that the aircraft may have been victims of "friendly fire." Analysts pointed to the possibility that the jets were engaged by a Patriot air defence battery.

While these systems are designed with sophisticated "Identification Friend or Foe" (IFF) technology, the high-tension environment following Iran's recent retaliatory strikes may have led to a catastrophic technical or human error. The Fact that multiple aircraft fell out of the sky simultaneously has only added weight to the theory of a systemic malfunction within the regional missile shield.

Kuwaiti authorities have urged the public to ignore social media speculation and wait for the results of a joint technical investigation with US forces. US Central Command (CENTCOM) has yet to issue a detailed briefing on the specific cause of the losses.

For now, the focus remains on the "joint technical measures" being taken to ensure that the remaining fleet — and the personnel operating them — are not at further risk from their own defensive systems.
