The leaders of India and Brazil have vowed to fight back against US President Donald Trump’s imposition of the reciprocal trade tariffs, which amount to 50 per cent on both countries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Brazilian President have reaffirmed their support for multilateralism and fair trade against US trade tariffs, said a statement by the Brazilian government. The statement said Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a detailed phone call with the Prime Minister to discuss the ongoing global economic issues and US trade tensions.

Both nations have reaffirmed the importance of 'defending multilateralism and the need to confront current global challenges,' the statement said. These talks came after United States President Donald Trump imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Brazil over a case going on against ex-President Jair Bolsonaro, who is accused of staging a coup against the current government.

Brazil condemned the move as an illegal attempt to interfere in its internal affairs. China backed Brazil, denouncing what it called 'bullying' by the US.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Trump announced 50 per cent tariffs on India over what he called a response to New Delhi’s continued trade with Russia. New Delhi has also hit back at the US, stating that the United States was itself purchasing the critical minerals from Russia, defying its own orders.

Trump, who has been hypercritical of BRICS, said the members of the bloc are trying to undermine the US dollar. BRICS, which was formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China in 2006, with South Africa joining four years later, has since expanded and now surpasses the G7 in combined GDP.
