A 24-year-old woman from India, identified as Simran Simran, has gone missing in the United States just days after arriving for what authorities believe was an arranged marriage. Police in Lindenwold, New Jersey, have launched an investigation into her disappearance, which has raised several concerns due to her lack of family contacts in the U.S. and her inability to speak English.
Simran was last seen on June 20, shortly after her arrival in New Jersey from India. She can be seen standing outside, looking at her phone, and seemingly waiting for someone in the surveillance footage. Officers who watched the video said she didn't seem to be in any immediate danger at the moment.
Five days after her arrival, on Wednesday, June 25, she was formally reported missing. According to investigators, an initial investigation verified that she had travelled to the US for an arranged marriage. According to The New York Post, authorities are now also investigating whether the marriage was a ruse to obtain free airfare into the nation.
According to Lindenwold police, Simran has no known family or support system in the US. They also mentioned that she only has one phone, an international model that runs only on Wi-Fi, and that she does not speak English. This has made it more difficult to follow her around or get in touch with her.
So far, there has been no success in reaching her family in India. According to a statement released by the Lindenwold Police Department on Thursday, which Patch News cited, "At this time there are no known family members in India to contact to obtain information on her possible whereabouts."
To help with the search, authorities have made a physical description public. Simran weighs about 150 pounds (68 kilogrammes), stands about five feet four inches tall, and has a small scar on the left side of her forehead. She was last spotted sporting tiny diamond-studded earrings, black flip-flops, a white T-shirt and grey sweatpants. Detective Joe Tomasetti has been contacted by the Lindenwold Police Department if you have any information regarding Simran's whereabouts.
