The United States and Israel have accused Iran of plotting to kill Israel’s ambassador to Mexico, Einat Kranz Neiger, which Iran outrightly rejected.
The Israeli authorities added, however, that Mexican officials intervened to foil the alleged assassination plot.
“We thank the security and law enforcement services in Mexico for thwarting a terrorist network directed by Iran that sought to attack Israel’s ambassador in Mexico,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry said in an official statement.
The Iranian embassy in Mexico, meanwhile, called the accusations “a great big lie”.
Tehran’s embassy in Mexico wrote in a post on X: “It is a media invention, a great big lie, whose objective is to damage the friendly and historic relations between both countries (Mexico and Iran), which we categorically reject.”
Several reports quoted anonymous sources from the US, saying that the plot was initiated in late 2024 by the Quds Force, an elite unit of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC), a claim that has not been substantiated with evidence.

The US officials also said that the plot had been “contained” and that there was no longer any threat.
Both Iran and Israel are long-standing arch-enemies, and actively engaged in a proxy conflict spanning decades.
Iran has historically backed Palestinian resistance groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad, as well as Lebanon’s Hezbollah and the Houthi rebel group in Yemen, which has only added fuel to fire and escalated the conflict with Israel.
It must be noted that the accusation of assassination is not an isolated incident; several Western states, including the US, have earlier accused Iran of plotting attacks and conducting secret espionage activities in the West.
