United States President Donald Trump has said he is likely to make a “final determination” on a deal with Iran to end the war, though Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said that while “the exchange of messages is continuing… an understanding has not been finalised”.
Before these statements, Iran’s top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said an agreement with the United States would not be judged on words but on actions, since confidence between Iran and the US remains low.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees operations related to the war with Iran, has said that “US forces remain present and vigilant across the Gulf region”.
In a post on X, the command unit, which oversees US military operations in several regions, including the Middle East, also shared a photograph of an F-16 fighter jet it said was flying “over the Middle East during a patrol”.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth said that Washington remains committed to its international security priorities, explicitly declaring that “we still have global obligations to ensure that, say, Iran doesn’t get a nuclear weapon”.
He made these remarks during the ongoing Shangri-La Dialogue security summit in Singapore.
The two sides have engaged in recent skirmishes where Iran and the United States launched drones and missile strikes on each other. According to official sources, several IRGC Navy personnel were killed in the aftermath of these skirmishes.
