Diplomats from China and Russia have spoken to discuss the “current situation in West Asia”, confirmed Beijing's ambassador to the United Nations.
The diplomat said Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held talks concerning developments taking place in the Middle East, especially in Iran.
In a post on X, Ambassador Fu Cong said, “Wang Yi said that as permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and Russia should uphold fairness on matters of right and wrong, adopt an objective and balanced approach, and strive for greater understanding and support from the international community.”
“As of now, the situation in West Asia continues to deteriorate, and the fighting is still escalating,” Fu added.
“The fundamental way to address navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is to achieve a ceasefire and end the fighting as soon as possible.”
He said Russia’s top diplomat expressed Moscow’s concern about the continued escalatory remarks by US President Donald Trump and retaliatory action by the Iranian government.
Lavrov reportedly said that “military operations must cease immediately”.
Meanwhile, Israel has attacked 12 Iranian cities in a pre-dawn air raid, killing 13 people, while Iran has retaliated by launching 10 missiles on Israel, killing and injuring many in the action.
Iranian officials have said that they were ready for negotiations but not for compromise, including agreements on the Strait of Hormuz.
However, they have declared it a no-go zone for US and Israeli-linked ships.
