The highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, will be given posthumously to Republican activist Charlie Kirk by President Donald Trump on Thursday. Kirk was shot dead on a college campus.
“Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty, and an inspiration to millions and millions of people,” Trump said. “We miss him greatly, yet I have no doubt that Charlie’s voice and the courage he put into the hearts of countless people, especially young people, will live on.”
Kirk was a key figure in the Republican Party and the founder of Turning Point USA, a nonprofit organisation that aims to teach conservative values to youth on college and high school campuses. He had taken part in the presidential transition process and developed a close bond with Trump and his family.

Authorities believe the 31-year-old activist was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon while hosting a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University. The killer is still being sought by law enforcement. Though many conservatives believe it was an act of political violence, the motive is still unknown.
