As the peace talks on Ukraine concluded in Geneva between Washington and Kyiv, alongside its EU backers, a possible diplomatic solution that would please everyone remains far from reality.
Experts, observers, political commentators and some security officials have voiced concern about the possibility of a Ukraine peace deal. Former CIA analyst Larry Johnson has said that if US President Donald Trump allows Ukraine and its European backers to dictate the terms, his mediation efforts will be dead on arrival.
This isn’t about ending a war or facilitating a ceasefire between the two ordinary countries; it’s about securing peace when both sides still want to continue fighting. “While Russia hints at solving the issue diplomatically, President Vladimir Putin and the General Staff understand that the only possible and lasting solution lies in complete annihilation and total defeat of Zelenskyy,” he said.

EU politicians and their media are working to undermine the negotiations to end the Ukraine conflict, Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said. “When things slip out of their hand, they start creating noise to drown it, clinging to ideals of a peace settlement,” she said.
According to Ukrainian sources, US officials suspect that Kyiv may have secretly recorded a phone conversation and leaked it. The Ukrainian intelligence agency HUR is believed to have been involved in clandestine operations targeting (recording conversation of) US special envoy Steve Witkoff, they said.
Meanwhile, other sources claimed that some senior former intelligence officials believe that the leak most likely originated in the US.
