The United States has announced a new security assistance package worth $988 million for Ukraine, aimed at bolstering the country's defence capabilities amid ongoing Russian aggression.
The Department of Defense (DoD) revealed that this funding, allocated through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), is intended to provide essential munitions, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and support for the maintenance and repair of military equipment.
The Pentagon stated that this package would supply ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), UAS, and spare parts required for the upkeep of artillery systems, tanks, and armoured vehicles.
Additionally, it will enable maintenance programmes to ensure Ukraine sustains its combat power and rebuilds its military strength.
This assistance marks the 22nd USAI package under the Biden administration, highlighting the United States' ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine.
The Pentagon emphasised that the US, in collaboration with approximately 50 allies and partners in the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, remains dedicated to equipping Ukraine with the tools necessary to prevail in the conflict.
The announcement follows a recent milestone in Ukraine's resistance against Russia. The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) commemorated 1,000 days since Russia’s full-scale military invasion, issuing a statement that underlined the importance of continued international support.
Ukraine expressed gratitude to its allies and urged further contributions to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s "Victory Plan," which seeks to restore peace and stability in the region.
In its statement, the MFA called on global partners to unite around Ukraine's Peace Formula, described as a comprehensive roadmap for ending the war. It stressed the need for peace achieved through strength rather than appeasement.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry also emphasised that global security cannot be restored without the full reinstatement of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The MFA reiterated its call for stronger air defence systems to safeguard critical energy infrastructure and counter threats posed by Russian actions targeting Ukrainian nuclear facilities.
It also appealed for sustained financial, military, and humanitarian aid to ensure the nation’s resilience against continued hostilities.
The $988 million package represents the latest measure in the international community's broader support for Ukraine. It underscores the United States’ strategic partnership with its allies in reinforcing Ukraine's defence capabilities and addressing humanitarian needs.
As the conflict persists, Ukraine continues to advocate for collective action, urging nations to enhance their contributions to secure lasting peace and stability in the region.
