The US government has approved an $11 billion arms sale to Taiwan to deter a possible blitzkrieg-style offensive from China that experts believe may take place by or before 2027. The weapons package deal was confirmed by the democratically elected Taiwanese government on Thursday.

China, in recent times, has aggressively amassed military strength, including naval assets, air force and ground forces and carried out several exercises near the self-governed island in a bid to send a message to Taiwan of a possible incoming invasion. While the US approval of the latest weapons tranche may increase tensions between China and Washington, the Trump administration’s recent remarks appear to be somewhat discouraging for Taiwan, as he signals strategic neutrality if the war breaks out.

Taiwan has scaled up its defence spending and aims to pledge 3 to 5 per cent of GDP to military spending by the end of this decade. The arms sales that require US Congress approval would be the second such sales in less than two months, as the Trump administration already approved a $330 million sale of parts and components in November.

The latest arms and ammo sale features the latest and most sophisticated systems, such as HIMARS rocket systems, howitzers, anti-tank missiles, drones and other equipment, according to Taipei's foreign ministry.

In a statement on Thursday, Taipei’s foreign ministry said, "This is the second arms sale to Taiwan announced during the Trump administration's second term, once again demonstrating the US's firm commitment to Taiwan's security.”

The Chinese Navy daily operates and carries out what international observers believe are grey zone operations, which could trigger a military conflict at any moment. Taipei's defence ministry said 40 Chinese military aircraft, including fighters, choppers and drones, as well as eight naval vessels, were detected around Taiwan in 24 hours ending early Thursday.
