Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expressed his gratitude to Washington for an immediate $2 million emergency assistance fund and deployment of the two C-130 cargo planes for humanitarian assistance operations in the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah.
Dissanayake, while expressing his gratitude for the US's assistance, wrote on X, “My deepest gratitude to the US and President @realDonaldTrump for standing with us yet again at a time of need. The swift C-130 deployments and immediate $2 million emergency assistance reflect the strength of our enduring partnership, firmly rooted in shared democratic values and close ties between our people."
Meanwhile, in an official statement, the US Indo-Pacific Command said, “The US military is assisting in rescue and relief operations while working alongside the Sri Lankan Disaster Management Centre and Sri Lankan Armed Forces to provide aid to the affected population in Sri Lanka.
The command also stated that it is working with the Sri Lankan authorities to provide logistical support to the country’s military, which is carrying out country-wide rescue operations. On Tuesday, the death toll had surged past 635, with hundreds still missing in the aftermath of the country-wide floods and landslides triggered by the heavy rainfall over the past two weeks.
Additionally, official sources claimed that 214 more people are missing in 25 districts, while 2,179,138 people from 611,530 families have been affected.
