United States Vice President JD Vance has said that Washington’s key objectives in the Iran conflict are to keep energy prices stable for US consumers while preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth also said that the US can sustain its blockade against Iran for an indefinite time frame.
While the US has claimed that traffic in the Strait of Hormuz continues to flow normally, the Iranian side has rejected this claim, stating that Hormuz remains closed and that no vessel can pass through it without Iranian authorisation.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States will apply measures against Iran that have “never been seen” before. Although the situation between Iran and the United States remains unpleasantly hostile yet calm, the region still remains on edge.
On the other side, the Russian representative at the UN Security Council has held the US and Israel responsible for the rising violence in Yemen and urged the full removal of the blockade imposed on the country.
“We explicitly demand the complete lifting of the maritime and land blockade of Yemen and the removal of all restrictions on the delivery of food, medicine, and essential goods to the country,” said delegate Yulia Zhdanova.
She told the Security Council that the long-standing deadlock in Yemen’s peace process had compelled the Houthis to become involved in a wider regional confrontation started by the United States and Israel.
The diplomat pressed for talks to resume without delay, stressing that a lasting political solution can only be achieved through dialogue that takes into account the legitimate interests of all major political forces in Yemen, including the Houthis.
