A five-hour-long Ukraine peace talks between the United States, Ukraine, and EU officials have ended in Berlin, officials said on Monday.
According to a readout of the meeting, the trilateral talks primarily focus on discussing the 20-point peace plan and economic agendas. In a post on X, US special envoy Steve Witkoff wrote, “The meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and delegations from the EU officials lasted over five hours.
Representatives held "in-depth" discussions regarding the peace plan, economic agendas, and more.” US-Ukraine and EU negotiators said in a statement that "A lot of progress was made, and they will meet tomorrow morning again.” Back in Ukraine, Russian drone and missile attacks have left more than one million Ukrainian residents without power after several drones struck critical power generation plants in Ukraine.
Internal Affairs Minister Ihor Klymenko said five regions were hit and at least five people were injured, and work was underway to extinguish fires and restore supplies.
While Russia and Ukraine have frequently targeted each other’s energy infrastructure throughout the year, strikes during winter exacerbate difficulties for the civilian population as severe cold sets in. On Saturday, Zelensky said more than 500 drones and 40 missiles were used by Russia in overnight strikes.
Meanwhile, Klymenko said the Dnipropetrovsk, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Odesa and Chernihiv regions were hit. Russia’s defence ministry said it used weapons, including Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, in the strikes, which are hard to track as they can change direction mid-course.
Hundreds of thousands have died on both sides since the start of the war in 2022. The Donald Trump administration is trying hard to resolve the conflict before the end of this year.
