The death toll from the Vietnam floods has risen to 90, with a further 12 people still missing after a devastating flood triggered by the incessant rains swept across parts of central Vietnam, the environment ministry said Sunday.

The incessant rain has battered parts of the south-central parts of the country since October; the rain fury has triggered massive flash floods and landslides. More than 60 people have died since November 16 in Dak Lak, where tens of thousands of houses and hundreds of thousands of residents were affected by the heavy rainfall, the environment ministry added.

The ministry on Sunday said that four more communities in Dak Lak were still underwater, while water had receded in other parts. Approximately 80,000 hectares of paddy and other crops across the most affected Dak Lak and four other provinces were destroyed last week, with over 3.2 million livestock or poultry killed or washed away by floodwaters.

State authorities are using military and civil aviation services to airdrop aid to affected communities in the region, while tens of thousands of aid workers are delivering clothing, water-purification tablets, instant noodles, and other supplies to affected areas.

The flooding has damaged roads and the railway network, affecting surface traffic connecting the north with the south, the ministry added.
Subsequently, the flooding water has affected the electricity supplies, leaving 129,000 residents without power on Sunday.

According to the ministry, the estimated losses due to prolonged rainfall have caused damage totalling a staggering $343 million across five provinces due to the floods. So far this year, more than 279 people have died or remain missing in Vietnam, with economic damages crossing well over $2 billion, according to the national statistics office.
