After a few years of rapidly increasing consumer prices, inflation has significantly slowed down in recent months, and the unemployment rate has remained below 4% for over two years.

The Republican held a larger advantage - 44% to 31% - on immigration. Immigrants comprised 13.9% of the population in 2022, the highest percentage in more than a century. Trump targeted immigrants who were in the country unlawfully. Trump was preferred by 40% to 35% on matters of foreign conflicts and terrorism.

However, Biden had the upper hand over Trump in addressing political extremism and threats to democracy, the second most important concern of respondents. Registered voters chose the Democrat over Trump by 39% to 33%.

Trump, who was found guilty last month of manipulating business records, is awaiting three additional criminal trials, two of which are related to his attempts to reverse his 2020 election loss to Biden. Trump, who falsely alleges that his defeat in the 2020 election was due to fraud, included this claim in an impassioned speech shortly before hundreds of his supporters raided the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Biden also had a lead over Trump on healthcare policy, with 40% to 29%. Biden served as vice president in 2010 when then-President Barack Obama shepherded a groundbreaking health reform through Congress, significantly increasing access to health insurance.

Previous Reuters/Ipsos surveys have indicated that Biden and Trump were tied in the presidential race, although several polls in battleground states have shown Trump ahead in recent months.

The Reuters/Ipsos survey was conducted online and nationwide, gathering input from 1,019 American adults, of which 856 were registered voters. The survey had a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points for all participants and 3.5 percentage points for registered voters.
