J&K polls: 28.12 pc voter turnout recorded till 11 am

Voting for the third phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly election began at 7 am and has since witnessed increased voter participation in just over two hours.

“With polling gaining momentum and long queues of voters waiting eagerly to cast their ballot, all the 40 Assembly constituencies across seven districts of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) have recorded 28.12 per cent voter turnout till 11 am in the third phase of the Assembly Elections, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), J&K, announced on Tuesday.


The CEO said 28.12 per cent overall voter turnout was recorded up to 11 am in all the constituencies.

 

Around 11.06 per cent had been recorded till 9 am.

 

Voting for this phase began at 7 am and has since witnessed increased voter participation in just over two hours.

 

Enthusiastic voters lined up early outside their respective polling booths. 

 

There’s special emphasis on security arrangements has been given in the three border districts of north Kashmir – Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora.

 

All three have 16 assembly segments, while Jammu Main has 24 Assembly constituencies.

 

Around 39.18 lakh voters are eligible to cast their vote in this final phase of the J&K assembly polls being held after a decade.

 

There are 415 candidates in the electoral fray whose fate will be sealed in the ballot boxes today.

 

Prominent candidates include former deputy chief ministers Tara Chand (Congress) and Muzaffar Beigh.

 

There was improved voter turnout recorded in the earlier two phases; the administration and pollsters are expecting even higher voter turnout in phase III.

 

This is the first Assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution in August 2019.

 

Vote counting and the results of this phase will be announced on October 8 along with the other two phases.
