Security has been beefed up across Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Phase II of the Assembly polls for smooth, incident-free polling across six districts of the UT on September 25.

 

Special security arrangements have been made for Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi districts of the Jammu division due to the spurt in terror incidents recently.

 

As part of the broader security measures, security personnel have been deployed across several areas, with vehicles also being frisked.

 

Security forces have plugged sensitive points to maintain active vigil and peace during the elections.

 

The polls in the second phase will cover 26 Assembly seats and six districts on both sides of the Pir Panjal region.

 

Elections tomorrow will be held in  Kangan (ST), Ganderbal, Hazratbal, Khanyar, Habbakadal, Lal Chowk, Channapora, Zadibal, Eidgah, Central Shalteng, Budgam, Beerwah, Khansahib, Chrar-i-Sharief, Chadoora, and Gulabgarh (ST).

 

Other places include Reasi, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, Kalakote-Sunderbani, Nowshera, Rajouri (ST), Budhal (ST), Thannamandi (ST), Surankote (ST), Poonch Haveli, and Mendhar (ST).

 

A prominent candidate contesting in this phase is former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah, from both Budgam and Ganderbal seats.

 

Other candidates include Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina from the Nowshera assembly seat and Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hamid Karra from the Central-Shalteng seat.

 

The first phase of elections was conducted on September 18, with a record voter turnout of 61.13 per cent recorded across 24 assembly seats in seven

districts, as per ECI.

 

With improved security measures, pollsters predict an even higher turnout in the upcoming phases.

 

Voting for the second and third phases in J&K will be held on September 25 and October 1, respectively.

 

Vote counting will take place on October 8.
