As polling for the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections progresses, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra appealed to voters to participate in large numbers and vote against those responsible for "snatching away their rights" a decade ago.
In a post on her X handle, Priyanka Gandhi said, “Statehood was taken, the right to vote and elect a government was taken, and the identity and self-respect of Jammu and Kashmir were taken. Today is the time to change this.”
She urged voters to strengthen Jammu and Kashmir by using their democratic right.
“Your every vote will strengthen J&K and your rights. Vote in maximum numbers and make the INDIA bloc win with a huge majority,” she added.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi also criticised the removal of J&K’s statehood, calling it a violation of constitutional rights.
“For the first time in the history of the country, the statehood of a state has been taken away, turning it into a union territory. This is an insult to Jammu and Kashmir and a violation of your constitutional rights,” Rahul Gandhi posted on X.
He urged voters to participate to restore their rights, bring employment, strengthen women, and bring prosperity to the region.
The NC-Congress alliance is contesting against the PDP, BJP, People’s Conference, and Apni Party in the 90-member Assembly election.
As of 1 PM, the voter turnout stood at 41.17%, with Kishtwar recording 56.86% and Doda 50.81%. Voting will conclude at 6 PM under tight security measures.
