Row erupts over the felling of 250 trees in the Barwal area of Kathua district after residents have started protesting against the land acquisition process for the State Industrial Development Corporation.
Taking notice of the protests, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary has assured a detailed investigation into the recent felling of over 250 trees in the Barwal area of Kathua district.
He said, “As an ecologically sensitive place, we cannot compromise on environmental concerns in the name of mere industrialisation.”
Residents in the area have been protesting over the felling of trees as part of the acquisition process for the State Industrial Development Corporation (SIDCO).
The deputy CM assured that a detailed investigation would be initiated to determine the responsible officials who granted the permission to cut down the trees and how such action could take place considering the impact it might have on the region.
“The ecological balance of J&K is of utmost importance. I have directed officials to launch a comprehensive inquiry into the tree-felling incident in Barwal, and strict action will be taken against any violations of environmental norms,” he said.
