The Centre on Monday told the Rajya Sabha that all probable causes behind last year’s fatal Air India plane crash are being investigated, with efforts underway to complete the probe within a stipulated timeframe.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is examining every aspect of the June 12, 2025 crash involving Air India’s Boeing 787-8 aircraft operating flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick.

“All probable causes leading to the accident are being investigated, and all efforts are being made to complete the investigation in a time-bound manner,” Mohol said in a written reply.

The crash, one of the worst aviation accidents in India, claimed 260 lives, including 241 passengers, after the aircraft went down shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad airport.

The AAIB’s preliminary report, released on July 12 last year, said fuel supply to both engines was cut off within a one-second gap, leading to confusion in the cockpit moments after take-off.

“In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cut off. The other pilot responded that he did not do so,” the report said.

Mohol told the Upper House that the preliminary report contains factual information based on evidence available at that stage and does not include any interim safety recommendations.

A source had earlier said the AAIB team is examining certain aircraft components and assessing a wide range of factors, with “nothing ruled out” in terms of what may have led to the accident.

According to the source, the probe is reviewing technical, operational, organisational and human factors, describing the investigation as a complex process requiring detailed examination of multiple systems and evidence.
