Bypolls deliver scattered mandate across India

The Election Commission declared results for six of eight bypolls held on 11 November across six states and J&K, delivering a fragmented mandate. National and regional parties shared victories, with Congress, BJP, PDP, AAP, and regional outfits securing key seats, reflecting a mixed political landscape ahead of next year’s polls.

Congress workers celebrate the victory of the Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency bye-election, where party leader Naveen Yadav emerged victorious, at Gandhi Bhavan in Hyderabad on Friday.

The Election Commission of India on Friday declared results for six of the eight Assembly constituencies across six states and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir where bypolls were held on November 11, delivering a scattered mandate with national and regional parties each securing significant gains.

In Telangana, the Congress clinched a major victory in the high-profile Jubilee Hills seat, with Vallala Naveen Yadav defeating the BRS’s Maganti Sunitha Gopinath by a margin of 24,729 votes. The constituency recorded the lowest voter turnout among the eight seats at 48.24 per cent.

In Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured a crucial win, with Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi polling 21,576 votes and defeating the National Conference’s Aga Syed Mahmood Al-Mosavi by 4,478 votes. The bypoll was necessitated by Omar Abdullah’s resignation from the constituency after retaining Ganderbal in the last Assembly elections. Budgam reported a turnout of 50.05 per cent.

The BJP and the Congress registered one win each in Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan. In Nagrota, the BJP’s Devyani Rana secured a comfortable victory; the constituency recorded a 75.08 per cent turnout. In Rajasthan’s Anta, the Congress’s Pramod Jain “Bhaya” defeated his rivals decisively after the seat fell vacant following the disqualification of BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena, who was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison earlier this year. Anta reported a turnout of 80.32 per cent.

Regional parties held their ground in their respective strongholds. In Mizoram, the Mizo National Front’s Dr R. Lalthangliana won the Dampa seat by a narrow margin of 562 votes; the constituency recorded the highest turnout at 82.34 per cent. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha retained Ghatsila, where Somesh Chandra Soren secured a decisive lead over the BJP. Ghatsila registered a turnout of 74.63 per cent.

In Punjab, the ruling Aam Aadmi Party defended the Tarn Taran seat with a 60.95 per cent voter turnout.

In Odisha’s Nuapada, which recorded 79.02 per cent polling, the BJP’s Jay Dholakia swept the contest with a margin exceeding 80,000 votes, marking one of the biggest wins of the bypolls.

The counting was held alongside the Bihar Assembly election results, with all eight bypoll outcomes reinforcing a fragmented political landscape ahead of several key state elections next year.
