Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw addresses the media at the National Media Centre, New Delhi, after the Cabinet meeting on Friday.

The Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of 28 new Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVs) and 85 Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs), along with the expansion of one existing KV, in a move aimed at strengthening India’s educational infrastructure. The initiative, with an allocation of ₹8,231.9 crore, is expected to benefit nearly 100,000 students and create over 6,700 job opportunities.

The new NVs will cover districts not yet included in the Navodaya Vidyalaya Scheme.

As of date, there are 1,256 functional Kendriya Vidyalayas, including three abroad -- Moscow, Kathmandu and Tehran -- and 13.56 lakh students are studying in these schools, an official statement said.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the alignment of the initiative with the New Education Policy (NEP). “To implement the New Education Policy, PM Shri was brought – all the Central Schools and Navodaya Vidyalayas were designated as PM Shri schools to make them a model for other schools to follow,” Vaishnaw said.

The project will allocate ₹5,872 crore for KVs and ₹2,360 crore for NVs. Nearly all the new schools have been designated as ‘PM Shri’ institutions, designed to set high educational standards as part of the NEP.

The schools will be distributed across multiple states, with Jammu and Kashmir getting the biggest share of the educational boost with 13 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs), Andhra Pradesh receiving eight KVs, Madhya Pradesh 11, and Uttar Pradesh five, among others. For NVs, Arunachal Pradesh will get eight, Assam six, and Telangana seven.

The expansion is expected to benefit 82,560 students through new KVs and 15,680 through NVs. Additionally, it will create 6,704 job opportunities, including 5,388 regular posts for KVs and 1,316 for NVs.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the decision. "Gratitude to PM Shri @narendramodi Ji for the decision taken to establish 28 new Navodaya Vidyalayas and 85 Kendriya Vidyalayas in the Union Cabinet today. The ₹8,231.9 crore initiative will accelerate Modi Ji’s vision to build a Viksit Bharat by contributing immensely to training more budding talents in world-class education," Shah wrote on X. "These new schools will serve as the cradle for millions of dreams.”
