The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has said it will automatically refund excess payments made by students during the Class 10 and 12 post-result re-evaluation process after technical glitches on its online portal led to incorrect fee deductions and irregular charges.
In a clarification issued on Saturday, the board said the technical issues occurred on May 21 and 22 when students were applying for scanned copies of evaluated answer sheets and related post-result services. It stated that while some candidates were overcharged, others were charged less than the prescribed fee due to a system malfunction.
CBSE said all excess payments will be refunded automatically to the same payment method used during the transaction. In cases where a lower amount was deducted, candidates will be informed separately if any additional payment is required.
The board further clarified that students affected by the glitch will not be required to submit fresh applications. Scanned copies of evaluated answer books will be processed and issued based on the applications already submitted on the portal.
The disruption had triggered widespread concern among students and parents, with several reporting failed transactions, payment errors and delays in accessing scanned answer sheets after the declaration of Class 10 and 12 results.

Under CBSE rules, students are required to pay ₹100 per subject for obtaining scanned copies of evaluated answer sheets. However, multiple users alleged that during the technical glitch, the portal displayed highly irregular fee amounts, with charges fluctuating sharply within hours.
Screenshots circulated on social media showed amounts ranging from nominal figures to unusually high values such as ₹8,000, ₹67,000 and even ₹69,420 per subject, prompting confusion and concern over a possible system error or payment malfunction.
Amid rising complaints, the Union Education Ministry had taken cognisance of the matter and sought a detailed report from CBSE, asking for an explanation of the technical failure, preparedness measures in place, and accountability of agencies managing the online process.
Earlier, CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta had announced a one-day extension of the deadline for submitting applications for re-evaluation-related services, extending it from May 23 to May 24 in view of the technical disruption faced by students.
The board has since sought to reassure candidates that the issue has been contained and that all affected applications will be processed without requiring any fresh submissions. It added that payment discrepancies are being addressed through automatic refunds and reconciliation of transactions.
