Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was discharged from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Tuesday morning following a week-long stay for the treatment of a systemic infection. The 79-year-old had been admitted late on the night of 24 March after developing a fever, sparking concern among party faithful and colleagues.

According to Dr Ajay Swaroop, the hospital’s chairperson, Sonia Gandhi responded well to a course of antibiotics. Doctors explained that she had been battling a systemic infection— a condition where pathogens enter the bloodstream and spread throughout the body rather than remaining confined to a single organ or area.

After seven days of close monitoring, the medical team confirmed that she is now fit enough to go back home. She is advised to continue her further treatments from her residence. The news of her discharge is giving a sense of relief to the Congress camp, as the political schedule is still tight with the developments in the crisis in West Asia.
