A Delhi court on Thursday granted bail to businessman Samir Modi, cousin of fugitive cricket administrator Lalit Modi, who is facing charges of rape, criminal intimidation and cheating.
Additional sessions judge Vipin Kharb passed the order during in-camera proceedings, allowing bail on a bond of ₹5 lakh with certain conditions. A detailed order is expected to follow, according to a source present in court.
The case stems from an FIR registered earlier this year, in which the complainant alleged that Modi had repeatedly raped and threatened her since 2019. The woman claimed he cheated her as well, having initially approached her under the guise of offering career opportunities in the fashion and lifestyle industry. She told police that Modi later forced himself upon her at his residence in New Friends Colony in December 2019
Delhi Police arrested Modi in connection with the case, triggering high-profile attention because of his family links. Lalit Modi, his cousin, is the former Indian Premier League commissioner who has lived in exile in London since 2010 after facing probes into alleged financial irregularities in India.
The proceedings are being closely watched, given the prominence of the family and the seriousness of the charges. Modi’s legal team has denied the allegations, terming them motivated and false, while the complainant has stood by her statement.
