A technical issue in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) led to major disruption in flight operations on Friday morning, affecting both departures and arrivals.
According to airport officials, several flights, including those operated by SpiceJet, experienced delays as engineers and ATC authorities worked to resolve the problem. Initial reports suggest that a software issue in the ATC system caused the disruption.
The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) issued a passenger advisory acknowledging the problem and assuring that efforts were underway to restore normal operations.
“Due to a technical issue with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system, flight operations at IGIA are experiencing delays. The team is actively working with all stakeholders, including DIAL, to resolve it at the earliest,” the airport said in a statement.
The advisory also urged passengers to stay in touch with their respective airlines for real-time flight updates, adding, “We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused.”
Low-cost carrier SpiceJet was among the first to flag the issue on X (formerly Twitter), posting a travel update that read: “Due to ATC congestion at Delhi, all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights might get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status via spicejet.com/#status.”
Flight tracking data showed cascading delays across multiple airlines through the morning, though landings and takeoffs continued under restrictions. Authorities said restoration work was underway and normal operations were expected to resume once the system stabilised.
