In a move aimed at strengthening the social safety net for vulnerable populations, the Delhi government is planning to raise the monthly pension amount for senior citizens and persons with disabilities by ₹500. This proposal is part of the government's efforts to offer additional financial support to these sections of society.

As per information from a government source, the Department of Social Welfare has already prepared a detailed proposal to revise the pension scheme. This proposal has been submitted to the Cabinet, which has, in turn, forwarded it to the Finance Department for further scrutiny. The final implementation will depend on the Finance Department’s evaluation. If approved, the proposal will be sent back to the Cabinet for its final nod.

According to government estimates, this pension hike is expected to benefit approximately 5.3 lakh senior citizens and around 1.2 lakh persons with disabilities across the National Capital Territory of Delhi. Under the proposed revision to the Delhi New Old Age Pension Scheme 2025, the monthly pension for senior citizens aged between 60 and 69 years is set to increase from the current ₹2,000 to ₹2,500. For those aged 70 years and above, the pension will rise from ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 per month.

In addition to the base pension amount, individuals from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and minority communities currently receive an extra ₹500 per month. Under the proposed revision, this additional support is expected to double, rising to ₹1,000 per month.

The proposed changes also include enhanced monthly pension amounts for persons with disabilities. Under the current scheme, individuals with a disability ranging from 40 per cent to 60 per cent receive ₹2,500 per month. This amount is now proposed to be increased to ₹3,000 per month. For those with a disability of over 60 per cent, the pension amount is currently ₹5,000 per month. If the proposal is approved, this group will see an increase in their monthly pension to ₹5,500.

To be eligible for these pension benefits, applicants must fulfill certain criteria. They must be residents of Delhi for a minimum period of five years and must hold an Aadhaar card that lists a Delhi address. Furthermore, the annual family income of the applicant must not exceed ₹1 lakh. Importantly, applicants should not be receiving any other pension or financial aid from either the central or state governments.

The pension schemes for senior citizens and persons with disabilities in Delhi were last revised in November 2024. With the latest proposed update, the government aims to provide much-needed financial relief in light of rising living costs and the ongoing need to support economically vulnerable groups.
