Delhi-NCR hit by massive dust storms; Northeast floods claim live

Videos from across Delhi-NCR captured strong winds and dense dust storms sweeping through the region, significantly reducing visibility and causing residents to take cover. This abrupt shift in weather brought a marked drop in temperature, providing a short but much-needed relief from the heat.

As the Northeast grapples with a worsening flood crisis, Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) experienced sudden dust storms and thunderstorms on Sunday evening, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 80 kmph and light rainfall.

In Delhi and surrounding areas—including Noida in Uttar Pradesh and Gurugram and Faridabad in Haryana—the weather shifted abruptly, bringing relief from the intense heat. Dark clouds gathered over the region as strong winds swept through, carrying thick dust storms that lowered visibility and created cooler, more comfortable conditions. Videos circulating from across Delhi-NCR captured the fierce gusts and swirling dust, prompting residents to take shelter as the temperature noticeably dropped.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a weather bulletin issued around 5 pm warned of dust storms followed by thunderstorms with light rain and lightning expected across the entire Delhi-NCR region. This included Noida, Greater Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, Manesar, and Ballabhgarh, with wind gusts predicted between 50 and 80 kmph over the following two hours. The IMD also reported a thundersquall over Safdarjung in Delhi between 4:35 and 4:37 pm, with maximum wind speeds reaching 66 kmph.

Meanwhile, the Northeast continues to face severe flooding and landslides due to relentless heavy rains. In Assam alone, more than 78,000 people across 15 districts have been affected, with eight confirmed deaths linked to the floods and landslides. The ongoing waterlogging has severely disrupted key transport networks, including roads, railways, and ferry services, hindering relief and rescue efforts.

The flood impact extends beyond Assam. Arunachal Pradesh has reported nine fatalities due to landslides over the past two days, while Sikkim is struggling with nearly 1,500 tourists stranded in its northern region after landslides blocked the main access roads. A tragic accident in Sikkim’s Mangan district on Thursday night left one tourist dead, two injured, and eight missing when their vehicle plunged into the Teesta River amid heavy rains.

In Manipur, floods and landslides have affected 3,802 people and damaged 883 houses in the last 48 hours, according to official figures, causing widespread devastation in the state. In response to the escalating crisis, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached out on Sunday to the chief ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim, as well as the governor of Manipur. Shah assured them of full support from the central government to help manage the situation.

Posting on social media platform X, he stated, “Spoke with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh and Governor of Manipur in the wake of ongoing heavy rainfall in their states. Also assured them of every possible help to tackle any situation.” He reaffirmed that the Modi government “stands like a rock in support of the people of the Northeast.”

The combination of harsh weather in Delhi-NCR and the devastating floods across the Northeast highlights the urgent need for coordinated relief efforts and disaster preparedness as the region faces continued climatic challenges.
