Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma on Sunday announced that the state government has a long-term plan to eliminate the use of water tankers across the national capital and ensure that every household receives clean water directly from the tap.
Addressing reporters, Verma said the goal is to gradually phase out the tanker system by improving infrastructure and providing piped water supply to all homes, as part of the government’s broader vision for transparency and good governance.
Verma pointed out that previously, there was no effective system to manage or monitor the movement and delivery of water tankers. However, he said that under the new system, Delhi residents will be able to track the tankers in real-time using a specially developed mobile application.
He explained that this app would allow users to see which tanker is headed to which area and whether it reaches its designated location.
To further improve accountability, Verma announced that sensors will be installed in the tankers to detect whether they have discharged water at the assigned location and to measure the volume of water unloaded. This data will also be accessible through the app, ensuring complete transparency in water distribution.
Speaking on the issue of tanker-related corruption, Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra declared that the current government is determined to completely dismantle what he described as the “tanker mafia.”
He said the administration had resolved to end the long-standing water crisis and had already achieved in 10 weeks what had previously taken 10 years. Emphasising zero tolerance for corruption, Mishra added that if any elements of the tanker mafia still exist, they should leave Delhi for good.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off 1,111 GPS-enabled water tankers for the Delhi Jal Board. Gupta said that residents would be able to monitor the location and route of these tankers using the tanker app.
Criticising the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, she alleged that there had been widespread corruption in the name of the tanker mafia, and that there was no system in place to track where the tankers were going or if they were delivering water at all.
With the introduction of GPS tracking and the new monitoring app, Gupta affirmed that the current government is committed to delivering clean water with complete transparency and accountability.
