Family arrives to identify Y Puran Kumar's body; post-mortem soon

Tight security at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research

News Arena Network - Chandigarh - UPDATED: October 15, 2025, 10:11 AM - 2 min read

A heavy police presence has been maintained since Wednesday morning at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, where the body of late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar remains at the Advanced Anatomy Centre (AAC).

Security arrangements have been significantly tightened, with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pushpendra Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kanwardeep Kaur, Sector 11 Station House Officer (SHO) Jaiveer Rana, and PGI Police Post in-charge Babita personally overseeing operations. Both entry and exit points to the AAC have been barricaded to ensure controlled access.

The family of the deceased officer—his wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P Kumar, and their daughters—arrived at PGIMER to formally identify the body and complete post-mortem formalities. This development follows the family’s consent after a prolonged standoff over transferring the body from Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 to PGIMER.

Police officials confirmed that all legal protocols are being strictly adhered to under court supervision, and the post-mortem examination will commence immediately after identification is completed.

It has been nine days since the death of 52-year-old Y Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, who allegedly died by suicide on October 7, at his private residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh. In an eight-page final note, Kumar accused eight senior IPS officers, including Haryana Director-General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur and then-Rohtak Superintendent of Police (SP) Narendra Bijarniya, of “blatant caste-based discrimination, targeted mental harassment, public humiliation and atrocities.”

His death sparked widespread protests, political outrage, and demands from the family for the immediate arrest and suspension of Kapur and Bijarniya.

Under mounting pressure and nationwide scrutiny, the Haryana government took decisive administrative action. On October 11, SP Bijarniya was placed on leave, and on October 13, DGP Kapur was also directed to proceed on leave. Surinder Bhoria was appointed as the new Rohtak SP, while Om Prakash Singh, Managing Director of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation, was assigned additional charge as DGP.

The case is under investigation by a six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Chandigarh Police, which is coordinating closely with Haryana authorities. Today’s proceedings at PGIMER represent a pivotal phase in the probe, as the long-awaited post-mortem—delayed due to the family’s refusal pending action against the accused—is expected to yield crucial forensic evidence regarding the circumstances of Kumar’s alleged suicide.
