Rail traffic on the Hatia–Rourkela section came to a grinding halt on Wednesday after ten wagons of a freight train derailed near Kanarowan railway station in Simdega district of Jharkhand.
The incident created panic in the area and led to the suspension of train operations on both up and down lines.
According to railway sources, the accident occurred between pole numbers 524/34 and 524/35 in a hilly stretch of the route when a goods train travelling from Rourkela to Ranchi went off the tracks.
The wagons, loaded with heavy goods, overturned and caused severe damage to the track. Fortunately, no loss of life or injury has been reported so far.
Soon after receiving information, railway relief and rescue teams reached the spot and began restoration work on a war footing.
Senior officials, including Ranchi Railway Division Manager Karuna Nidhi Singh, inspected the accident site and directed engineers to expedite repair work and resume train movement at the earliest.

Railway officials said that restoration may take several hours as the derailed wagons have to be lifted and the damaged track replaced.
In the meantime, several passenger trains have either been cancelled, diverted through alternate routes, or partially started from Rourkela instead of Hatia.
The cause of the derailment is yet to be determined, though an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the reasons behind the mishap.
Technical teams are on site assessing the extent of the damage, while the local administration is assisting in the rescue and restoration operations.
Passengers have been advised to check the current status of their trains before proceeding to the station, as services on the Hatia–Rourkela section are expected to remain disrupted for some time.
