Piyush Goyal marks four years of PM Gati Shakti, calling it key to India’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday celebrated the fourth anniversary of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan (NMP), describing it as a cornerstone in India’s pursuit of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) by 2047.

Speaking on the occasion, Goyal highlighted that the initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 13, 2021, has significantly reduced logistics costs and enhanced service delivery across the country.

In a post on X, Goyal stated, “Marking four years of PM Gati Shakti, a game-changing initiative by PM Modi, which has transformed India’s infrastructure planning through a ‘Whole-of-Government’ approach.”

He emphasised that the initiative integrates ministries, states, Union Territories (UTs), and various sectors onto a single digital platform, fostering speed, synergy, and sustainability in project execution. The minister further noted, “Driving seamless connectivity and logistics efficiency, PM Gati Shakti stands as a cornerstone in our journey towards a Viksit Bharat.”

Currently, 58 ministries and departments, along with all 36 states and UTs, are integrated into the PM Gati Shakti framework, with their data layers incorporated into a geospatial planning portal. The scheme has laid the groundwork for multi-modal connectivity, accelerating economic growth and redefining the planning and execution of large-scale infrastructure projects in India.

According to the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), India’s logistics costs have decreased to 7.8–8.9 per cent of GDP, a significant reduction from earlier estimates of 13–14 per cent. However, a report titled Gati Se Pragati noted that these costs remain above the global benchmark of 6–8 per cent observed in developed economies.

The report also highlighted India’s improvement in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index, where the country’s rank rose from 44th to 38th in 2023, reflecting positive progress but indicating room for further advancement.
