Google on Tuesday announced it will invest $15 billion over the next five years to build a data center for an artificial intelligence (AI) hub in Andhra Pradesh, India. This is one of Google’s largest investments in the country.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said at an event in New Delhi, “It’s the largest AI hub that we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world outside of the U.S.”

The 1-gigawatt data center will be located in the port city of Visakhapatnam. Earlier, officials from Andhra Pradesh had estimated the investment at $10 billion. This investment comes as tech companies are competing to build more data centers to meet the growing demand for AI services.

Google plans to spend $85 billion this year to expand its data center capacity worldwide. AI needs a lot of computing power, so companies are creating specialised data centers that connect thousands of chips together.
