Gulmarg fashion show sparks controversy, designers apologise

Designer duo Shivan and Narresh, who are facing backlash for displaying 'obscene' garments at the fashion show, issues an apology.

The show’s timing, coinciding with Ramadan-a sacred period of fasting and devotion for Muslims-fueled the outrage among many locals.

The Gulmarg fashion show held during Ramzan has sparked controversy, with many calling it inappropriate. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that his government would not have allowed such an event at any time of the year.

He explained in the assembly that an inquiry was already underway, but initial findings showed that the event was a private gathering organised in a private hotel without government involvement. However, he acknowledged that certain aspects of the show had hurt public sentiments.

Kashmir’s chief priest, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, also criticised the event, calling it unacceptable in a region known for its religious and cultural values. He expressed shock that such a show was organised during Ramzan and questioned how it could be tolerated in Kashmir.

Reacting to the criticism, Omar Abdullah agreed that the images from the event showed a disregard for local sensitivities. He instructed local authorities to submit a report within 24 hours and assured that further action would be taken if any law was violated.

He emphasised that the organisers had not considered public sentiment, the location, or the timing of the show.

He added that even if permission had been requested, the government would not have approved it. If any laws were broken, strict action would follow.

The controversy also led to backlash against designers Shivan & Narresh, who showcased their ski-wear collection at the event. They later issued an apology, saying they never intended to offend anyone and deeply regretted any hurt caused.

In a statement posted on social media, they clarified that their goal was to celebrate creativity and the ski lifestyle, not to disrespect religious sentiments. They assured that they respected all cultures and traditions and would be more mindful in the future.
