Heavy rainfall battered Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Tuesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for several parts of the city. The affected areas included North Delhi, North East Delhi, Central Delhi, New Delhi, South Delhi, South East Delhi, and Gurugram, as per the IMD’s nowcast warnings.
The IMD warned of moderate rainfall accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning, with wind speeds reaching 30-40 km/h, expected across the entire capital and NCR areas. The orange alert also extended to Sonipat, Kharkhoda, Farukhnagar, Bagpat, and Khekhra. Additionally, a warning for light rain and thunderstorms was issued for multiple locations, including Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Narwana, Fatehabad, Panipat, Gannaur, Jhajjar, Kosali, Mahendargarh, Sohana, Rewari, Narnaul, Bawal, Nuh, Shamli, Kandhla, Baraut, Pilakhua, Sikandra Rao, Hathras, Tundla, Firozabad, Shikohabad, Bhiwari, Tizara, Khairthal, Kotputli, Viratnagar, Rajgarh, Mahawa, Mahandipur Balaji, and Dholpur.
Delhi experienced rainfall earlier in the day, with skies darkening, signalling the likelihood of heavier downpours later. The IMD had issued both yellow and orange alerts for the city, forecasting moderate rainfall with light thunderstorms and lightning.
On Tuesday morning, the minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 21 degrees Celsius, 1.3 degrees below the normal, while the maximum temperature was expected to reach around 35 degrees Celsius, according to the weather department.
Air quality in the capital remained satisfactory, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 68 at 9 am, as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The CPCB classifies an AQI between 0 and 50 as "good," 51 to 100 as "satisfactory," 101 to 200 as "moderate," 201 to 300 as "poor," 301 to 400 as "very poor," and 401 to 500 as "severe."
In response to the adverse weather, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport issued an advisory warning that flight operations might be affected. "Due to inclement weather conditions in Delhi, flight operations at Delhi airport may be impacted. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience," the advisory stated.
It recommended that passengers consider using alternative transportation, such as the Delhi Metro, to reach the airport and avoid potential delays. The advisory further urged passengers to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information.
