On Tuesday heavy rainfall in Delhi led to the diversion of at least 15 flights from the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Eight flights were rerouted to Jaipur, five to Lucknow, and two to Chandigarh, as reported by airport authorities.
The capital experienced intermittent showers starting early in the morning, which persisted throughout the day. After a brief pause in the afternoon, dark clouds enveloped the sky, followed by a bout of heavy rain. The downpour caused significant disruptions, including severe traffic congestion and waterlogging in multiple areas across the city.
Earlier in the day, Delhi Airport authorities had issued an advisory warning of potential disruptions to flight operations due to the adverse weather.
The statement read, “Due to adverse weather conditions in Delhi, flight operations at Delhi Airport may be impacted. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience.” Passengers were urged to contact their airlines for updated flight information and advised to use the Delhi Metro to reach the airport to avoid potential road delays caused by the rain and traffic.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecasted rain for the day, issuing yellow and orange alerts for Delhi. The alerts warned residents of moderate rainfall accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning across the region.
