Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday described the Special Investigation Team’s findings on alleged Pakistani links of state Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi and his family as “explosive”, claiming the report pointed to a cartel working against India’s interests.

“Let me assure all of you that this is a very explosive report. It is a kind of a cartel which was working to defame and demean the development process of our country,” Sarma told reporters while releasing the BJP manifesto for the Bodoland Territorial Council elections.

According to the chief minister, the SIT report, running into 96 pages, clearly established foreign involvement. “In that cartel, a Pakistani citizen and the British wife of the Congress MP. This has become completely clear in the report,” he said.

The SIT, led by Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta, submitted its report to Sarma on Wednesday evening. “The SIT team has recovered many important documents posing a threat to the sovereignty of our country. Once the cabinet discusses it, we will release the report for the consumption of the general public and also decide on the next steps to be taken,” he added.

Sarma emphasised that the government was not treating the matter as spectacle. “The SIT report is 96 pages long, and there must be something in those pages. It does not contain some fairy tale. We don’t want to create a drama around the report, as the government does not work for TRP. We are dealing with it in a serious manner and will follow the necessary procedure,” he remarked.

The chief minister said the immediate focus was the Prime Minister’s upcoming two-day visit and the smooth conduct of the BTC polls on September 22. “Once the BTC elections are over, the cabinet will discuss the SIT report and decide on the next step,” he stated.

The political slugfest has already intensified. Gogoi, in a post on X, accused Sarma of reducing the office of chief minister to mockery. “So many embarrassing instances, for example, I remember he said that he saw Rahul Gandhi’s ‘body double’ during the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The latest flop show is even bigger than the RG body double,” the Congress leader wrote.

Asked about Gogoi’s attack, Sarma shot back that it was “the media who has made him a hero”. He also reiterated his earlier claims on Rahul Gandhi’s alleged use of a body double during the yatra, saying he had provided all details in a press conference in January.

Touching upon another controversy, Sarma accused the Congress of allowing its leaders to abuse the Prime Minister and his late mother during a meeting in Bihar. “The people of that state as well as the entire country will give a befitting reply to the party,” he said.
