In Gujarat, the number of cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) has risen to four, following a recent surge in infections. Among the four individuals who tested positive for the virus, one is an elderly man, while the others are children.

The infection, which primarily affects children and the elderly, presents symptoms similar to those of a cold, including a runny nose, cough, and nasal congestion, along with difficulty breathing in some cases.

A nine-month-old child in Ahmedabad has become the latest individual to test positive for HMPV, marking the fourth reported case in the state. The infant was admitted to a private hospital on January 6, suffering from a cold, cough, and breathing difficulties.

According to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, the child has no history of travelling abroad or coming into contact with anyone who has recently travelled. The rapid rise in cases has raised concerns about the spread of the virus in the region.

Earlier, an eight-year-old boy from Sabarkantha district was confirmed to be infected with HMPV, making him the third case in Gujarat. Just two days before, an 80-year-old man tested positive for the virus in Ahmedabad.

The elderly man, who suffers from asthma, is receiving treatment at a private hospital. Like the others, he has not travelled abroad, as confirmed by officials from the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

The first case of HMPV in Gujarat was reported on January 6, when a two-month-old boy from Rajasthan tested positive. The baby, who exhibited symptoms such as fever, nasal congestion, and cough, was treated and later discharged from the hospital.

While the majority of cases so far have been relatively mild, the rapid rise in infections has prompted authorities to closely monitor the situation.

HMPV was first discovered in 2001 and belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family of viruses. It is closely related to the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing.

The virus can also spread by touching contaminated surfaces or coming into direct contact with an infected individual. Like RSV, HMPV tends to affect the respiratory system, leading to symptoms that can range from mild cold-like symptoms to more severe breathing difficulties, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.

The increase in HMPV cases in Gujarat has prompted health officials to take extra precautions, especially given the vulnerability of children and the elderly to the virus.

Parents are being urged to ensure that children, particularly infants, avoid crowded places and practice good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing and covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing.

Those who exhibit symptoms such as a persistent cough, fever, or difficulty breathing should seek medical attention immediately.

While the current outbreak of HMPV is concerning, it is important to note that the virus is not new, and there have been isolated cases in the past.

However, the recent surge in cases within such a short period has raised concerns about the potential for further spread, especially in densely populated areas like Ahmedabad.

The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged people to remain vigilant and follow health guidelines to prevent further transmission of the virus.
