IIT Delhi climbed to 118th in the QS World University Rankings, retaining its position as India's top-ranked institution and improving globally.

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has risen to the 118th position in the QS World University Rankings, marking an improvement of five places from last year’s 123rd rank. With this achievement, IIT Delhi continues to hold its position as the highest-ranked Indian institution in the global list. The institute has also equalled the best-ever global ranking achieved by any Indian institution. Over the past four years, IIT Delhi has demonstrated remarkable progress, climbing 79 places from 197th in 2024 to its current standing.

The consistent upward trajectory has been attributed to strong performance across key parameters, including education quality, research output, and industry engagement. These factors have significantly enhanced the institute’s global reputation and visibility.

A major contributor to this year’s rise is the ‘Employer Reputation’ metric, where IIT Delhi improved by 11 places to secure the 39th position worldwide. This indicator reflects the confidence of global employers in the skills and employability of graduates, highlighting the increasing demand for IIT Delhi students among leading companies both in India and abroad.

The institute has also made notable strides in research. In the ‘Citations per Faculty’ category, IIT Delhi climbed 26 places, underscoring the growing global recognition of its research output and academic impact.

Further strengthening its profile, IIT Delhi delivered an impressive performance in the QS subject-wise rankings released in March 2026. Multiple engineering disciplines — including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, and Civil Engineering— ranked among the top 50 globally.

The institute also secured the 36th position worldwide in the ‘Engineering and Technology’ category, maintaining its leadership among Indian institutions. One of the most significant gains came in the ‘Employment Outcomes’ category, where IIT Delhi jumped 60 places.

This metric evaluates an institution’s effectiveness in preparing students for successful careers and leadership roles. The improvement reflects strong placement records, with graduates securing positions in prestigious organisations worldwide.

Professor Somnath Baidya Roy, Dean (Planning) and Head of the Ranking Cell at IIT Delhi, reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to delivering world-class and affordable technical education. He highlighted ongoing efforts to modernise curricula, enhance infrastructure, and expand international collaborations as key drivers of future growth.

Emphasising a long-term vision, Roy said that IIT Delhi views global rankings not as an end in themselves, but as a reflection of sustained institutional efforts and continuous improvement.
