Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the India-European Union trade pact will allow practitioners of Indian traditional medicine systems to offer their services across EU member states, creating new professional opportunities for AYUSH practitioners trained in India.

In a video message at the centenary celebrations of the Arya Vaidyasala Charitable Hospital in Kerala, the Prime Minister said AYUSH practitioners would be able to practise in EU countries on the basis of professional qualifications earned in India.

AYUSH practitioners will now be able to provide services in EU member states, which Modi said would significantly benefit young professionals associated with ayurveda and yoga.

The Prime Minister described the agreement as a historic trade pact that would give a major boost to Indian traditional medicine and help establish AYUSH wellness centres across Europe. He congratulated those associated with ayurveda and AYUSH on the development.

Modi said India has treated people through ayurveda for centuries, but efforts have often been needed to explain its relevance, both domestically and internationally.

He attributed this to the lack of evidence-based research and scientific documentation.

Modi said public trust grows stronger when ayurvedic practices are tested on scientific principles.

Expressing satisfaction with the work of Arya Vaidyasala, he said the institution has consistently tested ayurveda on the touchstone of science and research, working in collaboration with bodies such as the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Indian Institute of Technology.

He noted that the institution has focused on drug research, clinical research and cancer care, and said the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for cancer research, with support from the Ministry of Ayush, marked an important milestone.

The Prime Minister recalled the contributions of Arya Vaidyasala founder Vaidyaratnam P S Varier, saying the institution has played a key role in preserving, protecting and advancing ayurveda.

Modi described Arya Vaidyasala as a living symbol of India’s healing traditions, noting that it manufactures over 600 ayurvedic medicines and treats patients from more than 60 countries through its hospitals across India.
