India has accused Pakistan of violating a freshly brokered ceasefire, mere hours after the two sides agreed to halt hostilities along their contentious borders.
The ceasefire, covering land, sea and air, was to take effect from 5 pm on Saturday. However, reports of drone sightings and explosions in Jammu and Kashmir have raised concerns about the fragile peace.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, addressing the media in New Delhi, confirmed the breach, stating, “For the last few hours, there have been repeated violations of the understanding arrived at earlier this evening between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan. This is a breach of the understanding arrived at earlier today. The armed forces are giving an adequate and appropriate response to these violations, and we take very, very serious note of these violations. We call upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation with seriousness and responsibility.”
Misri assured that Indian ground forces are maintaining a strong vigil and have been instructed to respond firmly to any further provocations along the International Border (IB) and the Line of Control (LoC).
