India on Thursday reported a fresh uptick in COVID-19 cases, with the country’s active caseload rising to 4,866. According to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 564 new cases were recorded in the preceding 24 hours, along with seven deaths.

Of the fatalities, three occurred in Maharashtra, while two each were reported from Delhi and Karnataka. Health Ministry officials said six of the seven individuals who succumbed were elderly and had underlying health conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, and pneumonia. One of the deceased was a five-month-old male infant who was suffering from respiratory complications.

The ministry attributed the resurgence of cases to emerging sub-variants, including LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and the recently identified NB.1.8.1.

Since 22 May, the number of active cases has surged from 257 to nearly 5,000. Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases (1,487), followed by Delhi (562), West Bengal (538), Maharashtra (526), Gujarat (508), and Karnataka (436). Tamil Nadu, which had earlier seen a modest rise, has reported a slight decline in active cases.

In view of the resurgence, the Centre has issued advisories to all states and Union territories, urging them to ensure adequate supplies of oxygen and essential medicines. A nationwide mock drill is scheduled to be conducted today to assess hospital preparedness and critical care infrastructure.

Medical professionals have emphasised the need to distinguish between COVID-19 and other seasonal viral infections, noting that symptoms such as fever and fatigue are common to both.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA), while urging calm, has recommended continued adherence to preventive measures. “People should not panic. The best way forward is to remain cautious and follow protocols such as mask-wearing and hand hygiene,” the IMA said in a statement.

Health authorities have advised vulnerable populations — including the elderly and those with comorbidities — to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen.

The Ministry of Health also reiterated the importance of continued surveillance and testing, particularly in high-burden districts and urban clusters.

As of now, no travel restrictions or lockdown measures have been announced, but officials said the situation is being closely monitored and a central response mechanism remains in place.
