Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi presents a memorandum of understanding (MoU) related to visa facilitation to Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin during a ceremony at Bangabhaban in Dhaka.

India will resume issuing tourist visas for Bangladesh nationals from June 28, marking a significant expansion of consular services that had been scaled down over the past two years, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi announced on Thursday.

The announcement was made at the Indian Visa Application Centre (IVAC) at Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka, where Trivedi said applications for tourist visas could now be submitted from Sunday across five centres — Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Sylhet and Khulna.

“We are resuming our normal visa applications for tourist visas, which can be submitted from Sunday, 28th June 2026. We will continue to facilitate medical visas and urgent visas on humanitarian considerations,” he said.

Trivedi said the move would further strengthen people-to-people ties between India and Bangladesh.

The development comes after Indian visa operations in Bangladesh were scaled down following security concerns after attacks on Indian cultural and visa facilities in 2024. Despite the constraints, India continued to issue medical and emergency visas on priority.

The High Commission had been processing over 1,500 visas daily across categories other than tourism, with a focus on urgent medical and humanitarian cases.

During his visit, Trivedi also said visa services would continue to be issued through the five centres and could be expanded further in the future depending on requirements.

Earlier in the day, he presented his credentials to Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban in Dhaka, where he was accorded a ceremonial welcome, including a guard of honour.

Trivedi, who arrived in Dhaka on June 12 via the Petrapole-Benapole border, succeeds Pranay Kumar Verma as India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh.

A former Member of Parliament from Barrackpore in West Bengal, Trivedi has also served as a Union Minister in the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, handling portfolios including health and family welfare and railways.
