A suspected bomb threat forced an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Phuket to divert to Chennai on Friday, triggering a full-scale security response before the alarm was declared a hoax.
The aircraft, operating as flight 6E 1089, was carrying passengers to Thailand when the crew raised a security alert, officials at Chennai airport said. The flight landed safely, and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel immediately began checks.
An airport official later confirmed that the threat was unfounded but said further investigation was under way.
IndiGo, in a statement, said, “IndiGo flight 6E 1089 operating from Mumbai to Phuket on September 19, was diverted to Chennai due to a security threat noticed onboard.”
The airline added that standard procedure was followed, and authorities were informed without delay. “As per the established protocol, relevant authorities were informed immediately, and the flight will undergo necessary security checks in Chennai,” it said.
Because of night-time restrictions at Phuket airport, the resumption of the journey has been pushed to later in the night. IndiGo stressed that passengers were being looked after. “We are making all efforts to minimise inconvenience to customers including offering them refreshments and sharing regular updates with them,” the airline said.
Reassuring travellers, IndiGo underlined its priorities: “As always, safety and security of our customers, crew and aircraft is our topmost priority.”
