Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will travel to New Delhi to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit, Iranian sources said on Friday, as India prepares to host the grouping's 18th summit under its 2026 chairship.
The BRICS Summit is scheduled to be held in the national capital in September. Pezeshkian's participation is significant as Iran became a full member of the grouping in 2024.
India assumed the BRICS chairship from Brazil at the beginning of 2026 and will host the summit under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.
The upcoming visit will also provide an opportunity for India and Iran to discuss bilateral and regional issues at a time of heightened tensions in West Asia.
Pezeshkian had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024. The two leaders discussed bilateral ties as well as developments in the region.
Iran joined BRICS in 2024 along with Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia became a full member in 2025, taking the number of full members in the grouping to 11.
The announcement of Pezeshkian's visit comes after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi travelled to India in June to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting.
During his visit, Araghchi highlighted India's growing role in international diplomacy and said New Delhi could play a greater part in efforts to de-escalate tensions in West Asia.
Araghchi said there was no military solution to the crisis and described a negotiated settlement as the only viable path forward. He also said Tehran would welcome any constructive role played by India.
The Iranian foreign minister held talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during his visit. The discussions included regional developments and security concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
Araghchi also described Iran as a reliable partner for friendly nations and said Tehran would continue to carry out what he described as its historical responsibility for security in Hormuz.
Pezeshkian's planned visit comes amid continuing tensions in West Asia following the outbreak of hostilities between Iran and forces led by the United States and Israel on February 28.
His participation in the BRICS Summit is expected to put the India-Iran relationship and regional developments among the issues likely to draw attention during the September meeting.
